Introducing the New A2 GPS PRO PLUS Module

Posted on Leave a comment

DJI has released a new GPS module for the A2 flight control system. This new module, called the A2 GPS PRO PLUS, offers a significant performance upgrade over the current A2 GPS PRO. Read on for details on this new system and the tests DJI performed to verify the performance of this new module.

dji A2 GPS PRO upgrade

A2 GPS PRO PLUS Upgrades
1) Hardware
A new generation chipset is used to improve anti-interference, satellite acquisition and positioning accuracy.
Improved filtering to minimize interferences.
Optimized receiving chain to gather better data and increase sensitivity.

2) Software
The app assistant software (version: 1.1.22) and iPad ground station (version: 1.4.62) now have a new “SNR Health Index” and “SNR Fluctuation Index” screen that monitors GPS signals. By referring to these two values, users can find the best places to takeoff and fly their aircraft. (SNR Wiki)
‘SNR Health Index’ reflects the GPS signal strength captured by the GPS receiver. A larger number indicates a stronger GPS signal received. We highly recommend you only takeoff when the SNR Health is greater than 35. (SNR Health Wiki)
‘SNR Fluctuation Index’ reflects the overall stability of the current GPS signal. A smaller number indicates the signals have less fluctuation, which means a more stable GPS signal captured. (SNR Fluctuation Wiki)
These values change in real time with aircraft maneuvers and changes in environmental interference.

A2 GPS PRO PLUS ADVANTAGE
1) Catch more satellites.
2) The SNR Health Index is higher, and the SNR Fluctuation Index is smaller and more stable.
3) Better anti-interference capabilities.

On the fly dual speed joystick function

Once the joystick is centered, push twice (2 clicks) to change the joystick throw to half rate (half speed). This will reduce the Ronin response by approximately half which will help in making ultra slow movements and corrections. Push the button twice (2 clicks) again to resume full speed movement. When you power up the Ronin with the Joystick plugged in, the joystick will always start on full speed mode. The 2 click function break down

  • Power up – Full Speed
  • 2 clicks – half speed
  • 2 clicks – full speed
  • 2 click – half speed and so on.

On the fly Mode Change function function

3 clicks on the joystick will change the Modes including Motor-Kill function. When the inputs are set as below the order of operation:

Movi Joystick SBUS Settings

Proportional Dual Rate Thumb Joystick for MoVI Camera Stabilizer – Aerialpixels.com LLC

(1) Kill (Off) RED LED: This switch position kills power to the M?VI. This is helpful
in some cases for setup/initialization or if a wire becomes tangled. In
case of any problem or malfunction, the remote operator should
immediately activate the kill switch.

(2) Majestic Mode BLUE LED: This refers to the mode which allows the M?VI operator
to control both pan and tilt axis or just one of them. For some shots, it
is helpful for the M?VI operator to be able to control framing as a
single operator. Some shots are best executed with the M?VI operator
controlling pan, but with the camera operator controlling tilt.

(3) Dual Operator Mode GREEN LED: This 3 position switch allows the remote operator
to change control modes remotely. The top position is “Remote
Operator Mode”, which allows the remote operator to have complete
control over the gimbal. In this mode, the person holding the M?VI has
no control over the camera’s pan/tilt. One important point is that when
completing a shot, it is helpful if the remote operator switches to
Majestic Mode, so that the M?VI operator can move freely with the
M?VI without tangling wires, etc. Without switching to Majestic Mode,
the M?VI will hold its heading regardless of what the M?VI operator
does, which can make it difficult to reset the shot.

The 3 click button operation will mimic the 3 position switch of the RC Radio. Example

The version 2 (elite) of the Ronin Joystick by Aerialpixels will have advanced functionality and will be available in CNC machined aluminum matte black finish along with custom mounting bracket that will be adjustable on the fly.

The built-in push button on the joystick will have the following functions.

1. Dual rate or dual speed
2. Change the gimbal operation mode
3. Reset to default

Dual Rate – Dual Speed

The joystick will start up on normal or full rate mode and will operate the Ronin at the speed set by the App or Assistant software. A simple double-click on the button will reduce the travel speed by half on the fly. By setting a higher speed in the software and having the ability to reduce the speed without using the software on the fly will make complex movements a breeze. The double-click feature will cycle between full and half speed each time without interrupting the gimbal movement. For an example, start panning fast – double-click – pan slow.

Mode Switching

By clicking the button 3 times in a row the mode can be switched on the fly just like using the mode switch in the RC controller.

At power on the joystick will start on

Position 1 : Free, Smooth track off

3 clicks

Position 2: Free, Smooth track on

3 clicks

Position 3: Reset to center, smooth track on
